Tips for dry winter hair

dry winter hairHappy New Year! Living in Wilmington, we are fortunate not to have to endure long, freezing winters. On the contrary, our weather can fluctuate wildly, giving us cold and wind one day, then spring-like temperatures the next. While these warm days sprinkled in make our winters more tolerable, they wreak havoc on our bodies and our hair. Here are five tips to keep your hair healthy and beautiful this season.

Cover, carefully

A stylish hat and a cozy scarf are your go-to accessories this time of year, and not just because they look cute. Covering your hair is a great way to protect it, but think before you cover.  Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf under your wool beanie will protect your style and cut down on static. Lifting your hair out of the way before pulling that scarf around your neck will help avoid dreaded tangles.

Wash & dry less

Winter is the perfect time to give your hair a break from daily washing, and the ensuing damage from hot water, hair dryers and styling tools. That hot water feels great on a cold morning, but it will dry out your hair. Rinse with lukewarm water; cool if you can stand it. While you can’t go out in the winter with wet hair, opt for a cooler setting on your dryer.

Keep those ends trimmed

Maintain healthy hair by keeping those dry ends trimmed. Not only will this help you look your best, it will reduce the chance of any split ends from moving further up the strands.

Style with purpose

Whether your style is a messy bun, a waterfall braid or a slicked back ponytail, putting your hair “up” will protect it from hot styling tools, blowing in the dry wind, tangling and too frequent brushing.

Hydrate, and hydrate some more

Keeping your hair moisturized is your greatest tool against winter damage. Use a daily oil to provide protection and shine, treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment monthly, and drink plenty of water.
